What is a Listserv?
A Listserv is a mailing list program for communicating with other people who have subscribed to the same list. The System uses two kinds of Listservs- Discussion lists, and Announcement Lists. Discussion lists, such as LCLS and Circle, are setup for the exchange of ideas between list subscribers. Announcement lists, such as Extra and IL-CEN are used to distribute information one-way.
How do I subscribe to a list?
To subscribe to a list, go to the LCLS website > Services > Email Listservs, click on the name of the list you want to subscribe to. (If the list you are looking for does not appear on this page, contact LCLS to subscribe) On the page you see next, scroll down to the “Subscribing to…” section, and enter your email address. Please add your name as well. To make changes to your information or settings, you will need a password. You may choose a password, or one will be assigned to you. Select whether you want to receive mail in a digest instead of individual emails from the list. Click the subscribe button.
How do I unsubscribe from a list?
To unsubscribe from a list, go to the LCLS website > Services > Email Listservs, click on the name of the list you want to unsubscribe from. (If the list you are looking for does not appear on this page, contact LCLS to unsubscribe) Scroll to the bottom of the page – to the …Subscribers section. In the box next to the button that says “Unsubscribe or edit options”, enter your email address (this must be the address you used to subscribe to the list), and then click the button. On the next page, go to the Unsubscribe section, and click
the Unsubscribe button. You will receive a confirmation email. In order to complete unsubscribing, you must click on a link in that email.
To post to a list, send an email to the listname@lclslists.org – in place of “listname”, you should have the name of the list. Examples would be lcls@lclslists.org or cat@lclslists.org. The list names are case sensitive, so be sure that if the list is lcls@lclslists.org, you don’t enter LCLS@lclslists.org.
I’ve forgotten my password, how do I get it?
To get a password reminder, go to the LCLS website > Services > Email Listservs, click on the name of the list you need your password for. (If the list you are looking for does not appear on this page, contact LCLS to get a password reminder) Scroll to the bottom of the page – to the …Subscribers section. In the box next to the button that says “Unsubscribe or edit options”, enter your email address (this must be the address you used to subscribe to the list), and then click the button. Enter your password on the next page in the box in the top section and click the “Log in” button. Scroll down to the Password reminder section and click the Remind button. Your password will be emailed to you.
How do I know what LCLS lists I’m subscribed to?
To see what LCLS lists you are subscribed to, go to the LCLS website > Services > Email Listservs, click on the name of one of the lists you know you are subscribed to. Scroll to the bottom of the page – to the …Subscribers section. In the box next to the button that says “Unsubscribe or edit options”, enter your email address (this must be the address you used to subscribe to the list), and then click the button. Enter your password on the next page in the box in the top section and click the “Log in” button. Scroll down to the section “Your other groups.lclslists.org subscriptions”, which is on the right side of the page and click the “List my other subscriptions” button. To edit options on any of those lists, or to unsubscribe, click on the name of the list.
To change your password on a list, go to the LCLS website > Services > Email Listservs, click on the name of the list. Scroll to the bottom of the page – to the …Subscribers section. In the box next to the button that says “Unsubscribe or edit options”, enter your email address (this must be the address you used to subscribe to the list), and then click
the button. Enter your password on the next page in the box in the top section and click the “Log in” button. Scroll down to the “Change Your Password” section, which is on the right side of the page. Enter the password you wish to use in each box and click on Change My
Password. If you select the box below the button to Change globally, this will change your password for all of your LCLS lists.
How do I change my email address?
To change your email address on a list, go to the LCLS website > Services > Email Listservs, click on the name of the list. Scroll to the bottom of the page – to the …Subscribers section. In the box next to the button that says “Unsubscribe or edit options”, enter your email address (this must be the address you used to subscribe to the list), and then click the button. Enter your password on the next page in the box in the top section and click the “Log in” button. In the box for New address: enter your new email address, and then again in the next box below that. If you want to change your name or how it is displayed, you can do that in the box to the right. Click the “Change My Address and Name” button when you are finished. If you click the “Change globally” box beneath the button, your email will be changed for all of your LCLS lists.
I’m going on vacation and don’t want email from the list while I’m gone. What should I do?
To disable email for a list, go to the LCLS website > Services > Email Listservs, click on the name of the list. Scroll to the bottom of the page – to the …Subscribers section. In the box next to the button that says “Unsubscribe or edit options”, enter your email address (this must be the address you used to subscribe to the list), and then click the button. Enter your password on the next page in the box in the top section and click the “Log in” button. Scroll down to the Subscription Options section and for the “Mail delivery” option,
select “Disabled” – if you want to suspend all email for all of your LCLS lists, click in the “Set globally” box. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Submit my changes” button when you are finished.
How do I receive digests instead of individual emails from the list?
To switch to the digest option for a list, go to the LCLS website > Services > Email Listservs, click on the name of the list. Scroll to the bottom of the page – to the …Subscribers section. In the box next to the button that says “Unsubscribe or edit options”, enter your email address (this must be the address you used to subscribe to the list), and then click the button. Enter your password on the next page in the box in the top section and click the “Log in” button. Scroll down to the Subscription Options section and for the “Set Digest Mode” option, select On. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Submit my changes” button when you are finished.
