Join Us in Effingham!

February is a good month to learn more about the Southern Systems merger process, and a great time to join your colleagues in Effingham for planning panel meetings!  The Southern Systems Planning tab on this site will lead you to names and contact information for planning panel members, System-specific data and reports, official documentation from the merger process, and much, much more!  All posts related to the merger are designed for your input, and posting a response is easy.

This month’s planning panel meetings are:

• Thursday, February 10, 2011, 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Effingham Knights of Columbus.  Topics included on the agenda are a review of proposed by-laws, membership standards, resource sharing plan, and membership standards.
• Friday, February 25 – Saturday, February 26, 2011, (time TBD), at the Effingham Hilton Garden Inn.  A final agenda will be posted soon.

IMPORTANT UPDATE—New Public Library Construction Act Grant Program:

The rollout of the new Public Library Construction Grant Program has been put on hold because of a recent court ruling. The Live and Learn Construction Grant Program (see below) is NOT affected by the court ruling.

Thanks to the public libraries that filed Statements of Interest for FY2011 Live and Learn Public Library Construction Grants. Completed grant applications are due February 18. Application forms are available at http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/what_we_do/constructgrant.html.

You may still apply for a grant even if you did not file a Statement of Interest. For further information, contact H. Neil Kelley at 217-782-1891, nkelley@ilsos.net; or Mark Shaffer at 217-524-4901, mshaffer@ilsos.net.

Adult Literacy Grant Application Available:

The application for FY2012 Adult Literacy Grants is now available at http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/who_we_are/literacy/adultlit-grantapps.html. There are three separate literacy grant categories:

• Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring programs provide one-on-one instruction for adults to improve their reading, math, writing and language skills.
• Family Literacy programs equip parents and their children, together and separately, to improve their basic reading, math, writing or language skills.
• Workplace Skills Enhancement programs provide on-site basic skills learning opportunities at the workplace to meet the educational needs of working adults.

Applications are due April 15. ISL Literacy Office staff will hold three Webinars next month to discuss the three grant applications: Scheduled Webinars are:

• Adult Volunteer Literacy, February 16, 10 a.m.–11:30 a.m.
• Family Literacy, February 16, 1 p.m.–2:30 p.m.
• Workplace Skills Enhancement, February 23, 10 a.m.–11:30 a.m.

What’s New at WJIL: Planning for Summer Reading:

It’s true the snow is still flying – really flying here in Illinois- but this is still the perfect time to start wishful thoughts for warm weather and the summer reading programming that comes with it. Illinois has a rich tradition of supporting summer reading through the ILA iRead program, but you can still warm up your library’s summer reading program with a creative spark from the resources and ideas listed in the most recent edition of “What’s New @ WJIL”

New WJIL Course on Interlibrary Loan:

WebJunction Illinois is pleased to announce the addition of a new free LibraryU course to the WJIL Catalog. Essential Elements of Interlibrary Loan is a customized course for Illinois libraries authored and developed by Kate Boyle (Metropolitan Library System) and Laura Frizol (LaSalle Public Library). After the learner completes this course they should be able to define and discuss:

• Interlibrary Loan and Loan Policies —What should be included
• ILLINET Interlibrary Loan Code
• ILL Lending and Borrowing Practices —Responsibilities when requesting an item or lending to another library
• Photocopies and Copyright Compliance — Responsibilities when requesting a photocopy.

In addition, this course includes helpful resources such as a flip book of the ILLINET Interlibrary Loan Code, presentations on how to write an ILL policy, interactive content reviews, and screencasts of various ILL procedures. Is Your L2 Information Current?

The Library Learning (L2) service is a very important library resource that is used by the statewide library community. L2 features include:

• A directory of Illinois libraries, library staff, and public library board members, with an opportunity to include biographical information
• Event registration, including programs, workshops, meetings, and conferences, both online and in person
• A listing of events, organized by library system
• The compilation of one’s personal “learning history” of professional development program credits
• A listing of presenters that may be useful to program planners

Library staff and board members are asked to check their Library Learning (L2) profiles and update their information at http://www.librarylearning.info. Library directors are also asked to update their library information.

Individuals who change jobs, or work at or represent more than one library, are asked to maintain only a single profile. This ensures that the “learning history” is not scattered among several profiles. To change or add library affiliations, sign in, click on your name, and choose Edit profile. Then edit the libraries. The L2 platform only allows one email address to be associated with an account, so enter your preferred email address.

The continuation of the Library Learning (L2) service is made possible by eight Illinois library systems, working cooperatively with the Illinois State Library. The partners have collaboratively planned, funded, and implemented this project to maintain Library Learning (L2) operations and services.

The next Planning Panel meeting is this Thursday, February 10, 2011, from 10:00 am – 4:30 pm, at the Effingham Knights of Columbus (1501 W. Fayette Avenue, Effingham, IL).

The meeting of the four southern systems (Lewis & Clark, Lincoln Trail, Rolling Prairie, and Shawnee) Planning Panel is scheduled to allow each system board to move forward towards a merger of the systems.  Topics to be discussed will include Bylaws, Membership Standards, and a Resource Sharing Policy for the new system.
