Administrative Issues

Board Bylaws
A Board's Bylaws are the ruling document for the library board. The bylaws set out how the board conducts business, providing consistency as board members change. All board members need to have a copy of the bylaws. New board members should be walked through the bylaws point by point.

Circulation
For libraries, circulation is still their most visible activity, the service people most use. The library's circulation policy impacts who may use the library and who may not. As the most used policy governing the library, the circulation policy must accurately reflect the needs and rules of the library.

New Librarian's Helper
The New Librarian's Helper was created to provide an overview of public library administration for librarians and library boards. The handbook was not intended to provide in-depth answers, rather it provides general information on topics affecting the administration of a public library. The handbook's sections were designed to mirror the broad administrative duties of the librarian. As the sections furnish only an overview, an bibliography ends each section. An excellent resource to learn library administration is Directors ASK! (Administrator - Secret - Knowledge), a LibraryU module available at http://learning.libraryu.org/home/. New Librarian's Helper is approximate 40 pages, depending your printer and font size.

Orientations for Staff and Trustees
It is important to provide new staff and trustees with an working knowledge of the library. The orientation should cover the library's history, polices, procedures and other items of interest. The orientation helps the staff and trustees to acclimate to the library's practices, allowing them to comfortably settle into the library.
