TITLE:            Librarian/Media Center Specialist          

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Illinois State Teachers certificate in teaching field.
  2. Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science or Library Science endorsement
  3. Ability to function effectively as a member of the school staff.

JOB GOAL:        

  1. To ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information;
  2. To empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information;
  3. To instill a love of learning in all students and ensure equitable access to information;
  4. To collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to design and implement lessons and units of instruction, and assess student learning and instructional effectiveness.
  5. To provide the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the school library media program is aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of the school and the school district, and is an integral component of the learning/instructional program

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
(The following are the essential fundamentals to include but not limited to the following job duties.)

Leader:

  • Supervise and maintain activities and materials in the center and provide an efficient organization for effective use by students and teachers.
  • Participate in curriculum development and organizational activities through the building faculty, community groups, and task forces.
  • Inspire the use and enjoyment of the library by students and teachers.
  • Coordinate efforts with technology coordinators and other district/building coordinators and specialists.

Instructional Partner:

  • Work closely with teachers to coordinate materials and activities with the curriculum and with the classroom program
  • Select, acquire, process, circulate, and promote print, non-print, and electronic resources.  In so doing, the specialist must seek recommendations from teachers, as well as use appropriate selection tools to preview materials before purchase.
  • Work with the principal in planning expenditures, programming, goals for expected student behavior, and expansion of the facilities as needed.
  • Provide opportunities for students and teachers to produce materials for instructional purposes.

Information Specialist:

  • In accordance with district policy, developing and maintaining a collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and the teaching styles and instructional strategies used within the school building
  • Understanding copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property, and assisting users with their understanding and observance of the same
  • organizing the collection for maximum and effective use

Teacher:

  • Promote reading as a source of enjoyment for all students and teachers, as well as make available resources which encourage reading.
  • Teach students, both informally and in class situations, to use the tools and resources available in the center.  Assist students as needed in the location, evaluation and interpretation of resources.
  • Provide orientation programs for students and teachers.
  • Use a variety of strategies to make teachers and students aware of the resources which are available.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Salary is based upon Schedules A&B, of the collective negotiated  Agreement.

EVALUATION:

  • Each employee in contractual continuing service shall be evaluated in accordance with Illinois School Code.  Each employee not in continuing contractual service shall be evaluated once every year.

The library media specialist will handle work which deals mostly with people, objects, equipment in a general setting; depth perception and field of vision are important. Employee regularly is required to bend, stoop, twist, turn, reach, lift (up to 50 pounds), carry, pull, push, climb, and kneel; walking and standing approximately 50-75% of each shift. Employee must recognize differences in sound, such as voices/noises that are loud and playful instead of angry and combative; ability to differentiate tones and volumes in conversation.

Mental Demands:
The library media specialist must ensure that children are supervised at all times, and that children are involved in safe and appropriate activities. There may be a number of situations happening at once, and the library media specialist must be prepared to handle accidents and emergencies at any time.

The library media specialist will be working in a busy and occasionally noisy environment. There may be a number of activities and situations happening at once, and the library media specialist will have to supervise all students at all times.
