LCLS Librarians Learn All About the 3 Ls
LCLS was the site for a Libraries, Legislation, and Legalities (3 Ls) meeting that gave attendees a look at issues libraries are facing now and what future issues might emerge.
Public and school librarians as well as LCLS staff learned all about the 3 Ls on October 13. Kip Kolkmeier , Illinois Library Association (ILA) lobbyist, kicked off the workshop with his interpretation of how we can best advocate with our legislators and gave a current update on what he saw coming up in the future relating to libraries. Stay tuned to our Web site for how we can all be involved in local visits and communications to our legislators.
Bob Doyle, Executive Director of the Illinois Library Association, talked about the history of intellectual freedom in this country and Illinois specifically. ILA’s position in emphasizing local control in intellectual freedom issues is very strong as efforts to take away local control in the form of filtering and/or other unfunded mandates increase.
Phil Lenzini, a recognized expert in Illinois library law, completed the session. His beginning remarks were devoted to the Open Meetings Act and the Freedom of Information Act but he willingly answered individual questions from librarians on a variety of issues. It was a great opportunity for those in attendance to receive such terrific advice.
We’re looking at hosting another such session in the future, so if you missed this one, there will likely be another chance to hear these three experts another time.
