Have you noticed more controlled headings in WorldCat?

Automated processing is now being used to identify, modify, and control specific types of personal name headings in WorldCat bibliographic records.  This processing, based on data used to build WorldCat Identities (http://orlabs.oclc.org/Identities) and developed by Thom Hickey, Chief Scientist in the OCLC Office of Programs and Research, is projected to control more than 26,000,000 headings over the next few weeks.

In this phase of processing, personal name headings that consist of more than a single subfield and that match the established form or a reference in the authority record are being updated (if necessary); the heading is then controlled and the record is replaced.  Records affected by this processing can be identified by the symbol “”OCLCG”" in field 040 $d.  When a problem is encountered, the record is skipped and reported for manual intervention.

Dr. Hickey has posted a description of the project on his blog, Outgoing, at http://outgoing.typepad.com/outgoing/2008/04/controlling-nam.html.

About one-quarter of the project has been completed, and around 5.5 million headings have been controlled in WorldCat.

Video recordings for the hearing impaired is reinstated

The Library of Congress has reversed their September 2007 decision to replace Video recordings for the hearing impaired with Films for the hearing impaired and Video recordings for people with visual disabilities with Films for people with visual disabilities.

GateNet staff have reversed the changes made as a result of the previous decision.

These items should again be coded:
655  0 Video recordings for the hearing impaired.

OCLC Bibliographic Records Merge

The recent addition of encoding level 3 records to the WorldCat database has caused a multitude of duplicate bibliographic records. OCLC encourages members to report duplicate records and other errors electronically. Please also report record errors, such as:

  • Filing indicator changes
  • Type code changes
  • Name and subject corrections

Please complete the form at https://www3.oclc.org/app/bibdup/ to report duplicate bibliographic errors.
Other bibliographic record errors which negatively affect access should be reported at https://www3.oclc.org/app/bibchg/.
If you have any questions please contact Edie Elliot (ediee@lcls.org), Nick Bennyhoff (nicholasbennyhoff@lcls.org), or Leslie Bednar (lesliebednar@lcls.org)
